Coffee cupping is a vital sensory process within the world of coffee. It is a process that has been put together by the Specialty Coffee Association that is meant to promote an unbiased coffee tasting environment. Cupping is practiced by baristas, roasters, coffee growers, and coffee buyers around the world and is something that we recommend all coffee lovers take the time to do on the odd occasion.
Although special equipment isn't essential for the process of coffee cupping (all you need is a shallow mug/bowl and a spoon), having a cupping bowl and cupping spoon can make the experience easier and more pleasant. This spoon is designed specifically with coffee cupping in mind. It's a deep spoon, with an arched neck that makes dipping it in the coffee easy and gets a good amount of coffee to slurp on the spoon. This spoon carries the same amount of coffee as a traditional cupping spoon but weighs slightly less and has a wider base making it the perfect companion to take with you to cupping events!
If you want to explore the world of coffee further, start cupping your coffee today. This Cupping Spoon is produced by Motta Metallurgica, an Italian stainless steelworks company that focuses completely on accessories for coffee.

How To Cup Coffee
- Add 12g of medium grind coffee
- Add 200ml water - just off the boil
- Let it steep for 4 minutes
- Gently stir the coffee grounds on the surface - this will release trapped aromas and make them sing to the bottom of the cup/bowl
- Sniff up the amazing aromas from the beautiful brew
- Carefully remove the coffee grounds and foam that remains on the surface
- Let the coffee rest until its cool enough to taste (usually 8-10 minutes after you poured the boiling water)
- Now take out your spoon, slurp and enjoy the wonders of your coffee
- It is important that you slurp the coffee to allow it to aerate and impact all of your olfactory sense
- Pay attention to the details. What do you taste? What do you smell? What are the textures and mouthfeel like?
- Make sure you taste your coffee over a period of time. Take note of how the flavor changes as the coffee cools down.
