We love it when we find a coffee that not only tastes delicious, but its production contributes to the upliftment of the local community and the local people. This is exactly what we have with our latest Ethiopian release. The Bulessa washing station, founded by Tizita Bizuneh, began as a project to empower local women working in the coffee industry. Today, the washing station employs 15 full time staff, 100 seasonal workers and the majority of the coffee coming from local women farmers.
If you're a fan of Ethiopian coffee, you've most likely come across the name Israel Degfa. Israel has spent the last couple of decades building a network of coffee producers around Ethiopia that encompass some of the best producers the country has to offer. The Bulessa washing station is no exception to this rule, and this coffee, grown at a high altitude on the mountainous slopes of the Sidamo province delivers excellence in abundance. Israel Degfa not only further contributes to uplifting the community by providing farmers with access to healthcare, education and agricultural training and support.
Now to the exciting part - what's in the cup! This coffee is an excellent example of what you can expect from the Sidamo region of Ethiopia. The first thing you'll notice is how incredibly sweet this coffee with notes of vanilla and buttery caramel that bring to mind a sweet vanilla fudge. Delicate florals come to the forefront of this coffee in your lighter brew methods (such as Chemex or Clever dripper) but it still carrys that incredible sweetness, but with a little more honey than caramerl - similar to honeysuckle. Expect vibrant lemon / citric acidity in this c offee that will leave you salivating and pining for another brew.
